This illustrated book celebrates the game of polo, the "king of games", now played by over 8000 people in 35 countries. It looks at the history of the sport and the state of the game worldwide, at the players and their ponies, and at the international teams and their tactics. John Lloyd is a the leading polo journalist who specializes in recording the English social scene and writing about the game of polo internationally. He contributes regularly to "Polo International", "Sporting Horse" and "The Independent" newspaper and is the editor of "Polo Annual". His editorial advisor for the book is Major Ronald Ferguson, the Prince of Wales' polo manager.

Not a how-to book, this is a well-developed history of polo, from its ancient beginnings to modern times, with beautiful photographs of the game in action. (For a book on learning to play polo, see Steven D. Price & Charles Kauffman's The Polo Primer: A Guide for Players and Spectators LJ 2/1/89.) The authors describe in detail the international set of people involved in polo, dwelling on the groupies and famous people who follow the game (of whom there are too many photos, as well). This is a nice picture book, but the amount of space devoted to people, and not the game or the horses, will annoy horsepeople. Libraries with equine interests, or wide-ranging sports collections, should consider.
