Shakespearean scholar and private detective Ulysses Finnegan Donaghue finds his vacation in the south of France cut short by the murder of archaeologist Oliver Hardcastle and must confront a group of feuding, egotistical intellectuals to unearth the killer.

In this second appearance, London-based p.i. Ulysses Finnegan Donaghue (Mr. Donaghue Investigates, 1995) is persuaded to join an old friend, Dr. Clothilde Blanche, on a weekend trip to a valley in the French Alps where handsome, arrogant archaeologist Oliver Hardcastle has recently discovered Bronze Age inscriptions. Among fellow guests at the mountain lodge, run by Mario and Michou Antonelli, is Sir Hilary Compton, who, 20 years ago, found Bronze Age drawings at a site nearby. His frumpy wife, Beatrice, is just one of the women at the lodge targeted for seduction by Hardcastle, also in residence, while Sir Hilary examines the new find and rules on its authenticity. Soon, however, Hardcastle's body is found in a pool called the Lake of Shadows, and the lodge's pet parrot Petrocelli is found poisoned in its cage while a storm rages on the mountain, delaying outside help. Donaghue investigates on his own, questioning all the residents at interminable length, then coming up with a theory unimpressive even to the authorities when they finally arrive. The true solution, based on Sir Hilary's antic, over-the-top mind-set, is even sillier, though, in this show-offy exercise meant to evoke shades of Conan Doyle and Christie. -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. The second ingenious puzzler starring London PI and scholar Ulysses Finnegan Donaghue (Mr. Donaghue Investigates) gathers a disparate cast in the remote, rugged Alpine Valee des Pretres where, 20 years earlier, archeologist Sir Hilary Compton had discovered Bronze Age rock drawings. Handsome Oliver Hardcastle, rising young archeological star, has found additional drawings there, as well as some unlikely hieroglyphics. Are they authentic or are they fakes? Compton and Hardcastle, along with students, other academics, hikers and a reporter, check into the valley refuge. Donaghue and his gorgeous secretary, Bridget, are vacationing there with old friend Clothilde Blanche, retired plastic surgeon and dedicated outdoorswoman. Some interesting romances blossom, and jealous tensions simmer, too, exacerbated by a storm and a rock fall that cuts off the site. Three plot threads are meticulously woven together: Hardcastle's annotated list of the nine women present, all of whom he planned to seduce during the five-day visit; the assessment of the new pictures and deciphering the hieroglyphics; and Hardcastle's sudden, mysterious death in the dangerous Lake of the Shadows. The strands of the plot lead to a conclusion both surprising and logical.
