As the irrepressible Simpkin goes from warm to chilly, from sensible to silly, young readers can only be sure that he is up to no good. By the award-winning illustrator for Matilda.

Blake uses a catchy, singsongy text and a spirited main character--a blond boy named Simpkin--to highlight common adjectives ("weak," "strong," "warm," etc.). Scrawled, uncomplicated ink sketches, filled in with minimal but bright watercolors, give Simpkin a rag-doll-like versatility; most of the action is set against a white background, thereby focusing attention on Simpkin's antics. "Here is SIMPKIN," writes Blake on the opening page, which portrays the boy napping peacefully in a messy room. Simpkin wakes up, and "Simpkin ONCE and Simpkin TWICE"--here he stretches, then looks in the mirror--"Simpkin NASTY Simpkin NICE"--he grimaces at his sister, then (presumably repenting) gives her a rather sloppy bouquet of flowers. The story proceeds in this jovial fashion until, having just gotten dressed to go out with his family, Simpkin tumbles back into bed: "Simpkin JUST NOT THERE AT ALL." Some other applicable adjectives: bright, bouncy, beguiling. Ages 2-6.

Ages 2-4. Written in brief, rhyming lines with keywords capitalized, this could be called a concept book, but it offers more interplay between characters than most books in the genre. "Simpkin WARM" shows the happy lad in the bathtub with steamy water showering down on him, while the facing page shows him shocked blue and shivery from the cold as his sister reaches over and turns off the hot-water tap: "Simpkin CHILLY." This sort of elemental humor will appeal to preschoolers as well as to toddlers, who are nailing down the meanings of words and the concept of opposites. The appealing artwork--ink drawings with bright watercolor washes--adds humanity and wit to the simple text. While the pen strokes look almost haphazard, they deftly create characters that kids will want to watch. Carolyn Phelan
