9780099528395: The 39 Steps (Vintage Classics)

The first of five novels featuring action hero Richard Hannay, and the basis for the classic Hitchcock film

May 1914. Britain is on the eve of war with Germany. Richard Hannay is living a quiet life in London, but after a chance encounter with a mysterious stranger he stumbles into a hair-raising adventure—a desperate hunt across the country and against the clock, pursued by the police and a cunning, ruthless enemy. Hannay's life and the security of Britain are in grave peril, and everything rests on the solution to a baffling enigma: what are the 39 steps?

Book Description:

In this classic tale of wartime espionage, Richard Hannay's living nightmare begins with the discovery of a dead man and a notebook with thirty-nine steps to uncover. David Robb stars as Hannay and Doctor Who’s Tom Baker plays his ally Sir Walter Bullivant, in this recording which pays homage to the classic Hitchcock film.

About the Author:

John Buchan (1875–1940) led an interesting and varied life as a statesman, barrister, journalist, intelligence officer, Member of Parliament, historian, biographer, poet, and novelist. His work was a considerable influence on other novelists, including Graham Greene, Ian Fleming, and John le Carré. He published his most popular novel, The Thirty-Nine Steps, in 1915, and it has never since been out of print. Stella Rimington is the author of At Risk and the former director general of MI5.

Book Description Random House UK, 2013. Book Condition: New. Brand New, Unread Copy in Perfect Condition. A+ Customer Service! Summary: "Richard Hannay is, like his American brother Philip Marlowe, a modern knight errant. Charging through a hypocritical world, he is a seeker after truth with a boundless love of nature, a liking for simple pleasures and a hatred of pettiness and snobberies. Buchan's novels are eerily resonant with today's troubles. Hannay is a hero for all times". Bookseller Inventory # ABE_book_new_0099528398
