Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë were taught at home and together created vivid fantasy worlds which they explored in their writing. In 1846, the three sisters published Poems under the names Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell, then went on to enjoy individual success with their writing. Charlotte Brontë's (1816–1855) first novel, The Professor, was initially rejected by publishers, so Jane Eyre became Charlotte's first published novel in 1847, followed by Shirley in 1849 and Villette in 1853. Anne Brontë (1820–1849) published Agnes Grey in 1847 and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall in 1848. Emily Brontë (1818–1848) published Wuthering Heights in 1847.
