Unfailingly exciting and a complete joy to read, this new translation brings Dumas's original to buoyant life.

Four men—the young Gascon D'Artagnan and the legendary musketeers Athos, Porthos, and Aramis—are ready to sacrifice everything, from their purses to their lives, for the common good. Propelled by the wicked machinations of Cardinal Richelieu and the magnetic Milady de Winter, the devoted friends adventure across seas and over rooftops, from masked balls to a medieval prison, to defend the honor of the Queen and the life of the King. Dashing, knockabout, romantic, violent, tongue-in-cheek, chilling, and tragic, The Three Musketeers is a wonderful piece of storytelling. Will Hobson's translation gives the dialogue the same charge that it has in the French, to make it as funny, vivacious, and immediate.

About the Author:
Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) was a French playwright, historian, and prolific novelist, penning a string of successful books including The Three Musketeers, The Count of Monte Cristo, and Twenty Years After. His novels have been translated into 100 different languages and inspired more than 200 films. Will Hobson is a critic and translator whose translations include the Goncourt Prize-winning The Battle by Patrick Rambaud, Marilyn's Last Sessions by Michel Schneider, and Being Arab by Samir Kassir, which won the Index on Censorship Freedom of Expression Award.
Review:
"Dumas's novels are shameless word-guzzlers, big and plush and almost sinfully comfortable. . . . His storytelling never seems the least bit mechanical: no assembly line, then or now, could ever turn out a narrative as joyful, as eccentric, as maddeningly human as The Three Musketeers."  —New York Times

"There was nobody quicker than Dumas. There were few better. Dumas stands proudly in the pantheon of 19th-century greats. He deserves to be regarded alongside Dickens and Tolstoy as an influential, enduring writer."  —Glasgow Herald
