Since the start of the 1990s the housing benefit budget has almost doubled in real terms and now stands at over #10 billion. The amount of housing benefit fraud estimated by the Government is around #1 billion, although the Committee consider the true total may be over #2 billion. These figures illustrate the magnitude of the problem which must be tackled more efficiently. In their report and recommendations to the Government, the Committee has considered evidence from a variety of contributors including: the Secretary of State for Social Security, Audit Commission, Local Authority Investigation Officers Group, Benefits Agency, Post Office, Immigration Service Union, Data Protection Registrar, Association of Metropolitan Authorities and Association of District Councils, and district and borough councils around the country.
