Key facts include: there are 8.3 million pupils in 25,500 maintained and independent schools in England; 91 per cent of pupils were taught in maintained schools, seven per cent attended independent schools and one per cent went to special schools; and there were 17.7 pupils to every teacher in maintained schools (a slight reduction from 17.9 in 2003).
