This publication, one of eight reports on hospital medical staffing, is based on research into the work of anaesthetists in nine hospitals. It examines working patterns and hours of work and makes recommendations to improve efficiency in anaesthetics departments. Under discussion are workloads for trainees and consultants when on call, workloads in neuroanaesthetics and cardioanaesthetics and for organ donation, postoperative recovery facilities, peroperative assessments, chronic pain relief, anaesthesia for other services and national manpower trends.
