The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMID) was set up under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. Its task is to advise the Government on measures to prevent and deal with problems arising from the misuse of drugs. Previous studies in the drugs field have touched upon the subject of training, but this report is probably the first of its kind to address itself specifically to the training needs of workers across a wide range of professions concerned in some way with problem drug use. The report records conclusions reached in the light of a nationwide trawl for information. In particular, it notes the limited provision of training, the reasons why training has not been more fully developed and the urgent need to ensure appropriate levels of training are available to those expected to provide help to problem drug users. The report sets out a series of recommendations on the specific action needed to fill the gaps in current training provisions.
