The late Professor Davies was an authority on the history of North America and this volume is a testament to his knowledge and scholarship. The calendar entries (many of which are in transcript form) show the wide range of difficulties experienced by the various colonial administrations: the declaration of war on Spain in October 1739 at a time when the defences in the colonies were woefully neglected; the encirclement of the American colonies by France; the French and Spanish attempts to detach Indian tribes from their loyalty to Britain; the lack of co-operation from difficult assemblies for raising revenue for defence works and for payment of officials' salaries. All the problems, big and small, confronting the governors are revealed in their correspondence with Whitehall.
