Smoking-related diseases are the subject of this year's special chapter in the "Health in Scotland Report". The wide spectrum of diseases attributable to the repeated inhalation of tobacco smoke cause many premature deaths, much avoidable morbidity and impose a great burden on the Scottish health service. Along with chapters describing the current health of the people of Scotland, events during the year with implications for health and recent changes in mortality and morbidity rates, this report should stimulate discussion about ways of improving health in Scotland.
