This book gives an account of Britain's social and working life, landscape, manners and amusements from the 17th century onward, seen through extracts from unpublished travellers' diaries deposited in county record offices. The writings of country gentlemen, parsons, ladies of education and leisure, antiquarians, poets, spa bathers and holidaymakers are among the 600 or so diaries listed, and the extracts are illustrated with contemporary engravings, and sketches by the diarists themselves. The book provides the historian with a source of contemporary evidence, and would be of interest to anyone interested in the rigours and pleasures of travel in bygone days.
