The BioQUEST Library is an academic, peer-reviewed publication of electronic curricular materials published in annual volumes (the 1998 BioQUEST Library being the fifth volume). Each edition includes new and revised modules, additional supporting tools and materials, and large compilations of scientific data sets.
The fifty-plus software simulations, tools, data sets, and other supporting materials in ecology, evolution, genetics, molecular biology, physiology, developmental biology, and botany contribute to a flexible problem-solving space for investigations that can be limited or quite sophisticated and challenging. In each of the modules, the students craft a research question, pursue solutions to their problem, and finally decide on their criteria for closure and publication, just as scientists do.
The materials nominated for inclusion in the BioQUEST Library must have the potential to catalyze curricular change; for example, they must have a significantly robust problem space, the potential for students to pursue multiple hypotheses simultaneously, and the ability to generate and analyze large data sets. The modules must also be open-ended in the respect that they must require students to assess the completeness of their problem-solving endeavors and the validity and utility of their answers.

The BioQUEST Library is an annual peer-reviewed publication of computer-based curricular materials that brings together more than 60 software simulations, tools, datasets, and other support materials, including manuals for most modules, in ecology, evolution, genetics, molecular biology, physiology, developmental biology, botany, and neurobiology. The modules in The BioQUEST Library have been designed to provide a flexible problem-solving space for investigations that can range from the simple to the sophisticated and challenging. In each of the modules, the students are expected to craft a research question, to pursue solutions to their question, and to decide on criteria for closure and publication, just as academic and professional scientists do. The materials included in The BioQUEST Library are designed to provide a robust problem space in which students can pursue multiple hypotheses simultaneously and generate and analyze large datasets. The modules are open-ended and enable students to evaluate their problem -solving endeavors as well as the validity and utility of their solutions
The BioQUEST Consortium consists of biologists (researchers and teachers), science education researchers, historians and philosophers of biology, computer scientists, academic computing specialists, designers, cognitive psychologists, curriculum developers, and others who are committed to transforming biology education through the extensive use of research and research-like experiences in teaching biology. The Consortium is currently a community of 5500-plus educators who are interested in issues related to teaching and learning biology, the application of technological innovations, and the potential influence of those technologies on teaching practices and the organization of schools.
