9780121373030: The Birds of Africa, Volume III

The Birds of Africa is the first handbook to describe all the birds of the African continent in one series. These volumes have received worldwide acclaim for their clear, concise presentation of material and the excellent quality of the color plates, which vividly illustrate the African avifauna. The third volume completes the coverage of the non-passerine families, and marks the halfway point in realizing the late Leslie Brown's dream of a new African bird handbook. As in Volume 2, invited experts thoroughly describe each species under a comprehensive set of headings.

From the Back Cover:

By far the most authoritative and comprehensive work ever published on the birds of Africa. The Editors and artists have worked closely with the 16 authors of this volume - all internationally acknowledged experts on their bird families - to produce encyclopaedic accounts of each species.
This volume completes the non-passerines, dealing with all species occurring on the continent - residents and visitors alike - in the following familes: parrots, turacos, cuckoos, owls, nightjars, swifts, colies, kingfishers and their allies, and woodpeckers and their allies. All are illustrated, and all known biological information is included. The passerines (songbirds) will be covered in four forthcoming volumes, already in preparation.

About the Author:

C. Hilary Fry was born in England in 1937, and an enduring passion for African birds was generated when he led an undergraduate expedition from Cambridge University to Annobon (Pagalu) Island. Later ornithological expeditions were to Lake Chad four times, Lake Turkana, Okavango, by hovercraft along the Neger and Congo Rivers, and to Egypt (Sinai), Borneo and Brazil. He lived in Nigeria for seven years and gained his Ph.D. there with studies of bee-eaters. At Aberdeen University in 1967-68 his main research interests were in avian co-operative breeding, migration and systematics, and he supervised doctoral researches on bee-eater sociobiology and wagtail ecology. Studies in African ornithology earned him Aberdeen's D.Sc. degree; his 190 publications include The Bee-eaters (1984) and, with his wife Kathie, the award winning Kingfishers, Bee-eaters and Rollers (1992). He is a Corresponding Fellow of the AOU and a former Council Member of the BOU. In 1994 he delivered the inaugural Cecily Niven Memorial Lecture in Port Elizabeth and Cape Town. After nine years in Oman, where he was Chairman of Biology at Sultan Qaboos University, he is now an Honorary Professor in Zoology at Aberdeen University and lives with his wife in Cumbria, England.

Stuart Keith was the first president of The American Birding Association, which now has 16,000 members, and for a number of years was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as Champion Bird Watcher. Keith pioneered the tape-recording of forest birds in his book Birds of the African Rain Forest, and has produced a film on birds, shown throughout the U.S. for the National Audubon Society. His publications on African birds include an avifaunal study of the Impenetrable Forest, Uganda, aswell as a European field guide, Collins Bird Guide. Keith is currently a Research Associate at The American Museum of Natural History in the Department of Ornithology.

Emil K. Urban is co-chairman of the African Working Group on Cranes and is highly involved in studies on status, distribution, and life history of cranes. He is a Fellow of the American Ornithologists' Union and received the first Louis K. Bell Alumni Research Award at Augusta College, Georgia. For many years he has worked on birds and mammals in Ethiopia, and was involved in the planning stages of the first edition of The Birds of Africa Dr. Urban has published numerous papers on African birds, including A Checklist of Birds of Ethiopia. Urban is currently Chairman of the Department of Biology at Augusta College, Georgia.
