9780123264275: Ethernet Networking Clearly Explained

Ethernet Networking Clearly Explained provides an in-depth explanation of all the interrelated pieces that go into an Ethernet
network. It emphasizes that making a choice in one aspect of the network design often constrains choices in other aspects. It also emphasizes current Ethernet technologies, including Gigabit Ethernet, and how these new technologies affect network design choices. In addition, readers will be exposed to issues related to maintaining and
securing their networks. This book is intended for IS professionals responsible for designing and implementing an Ethernet at a single location (LANs, not WANs) and readers who may not have a networking background.

* Readers will learn to design and implement Ethernet networks that include a variety of hardware and computer operating systems
* Shows how emphasizing a choice in one aspect of a network's design often contstrains choices in other aspects

From the Back Cover:

Gigabit? Coax? LAN? WAN? TCP / IP? Plenum? If these terms and acronyms sound like a foreign language to you, then you've picked up the right book.

The majority of today's local area networks and small Intranets are based on Ethernet, a specification for the way in which computers gain access to network media. Although the Ethernet specification itself is not difficult to understand, the myriad of choices facing someone who needs to install an Ethernet network can be daunting. Written in an approachable, easy-to-understand style, Ethernet Networking Clearly Explained will help both beginners and professionals unravel the complexity of local area networks and Intranets that use Ethernet technology. Readers will learn:

  • How the Ethernet works, with an emphasis on current technologies such as Gigabit Ethernet
  • How to design and select complementary components of Ethernet networks
  • The various types of cable, software, and hardware involved in constructing, connecting, operating and monitoring Ethernet networks
  • Procedures for monitoring network traffic and keeping track of the equipment attached to networks
