9780123820204: Database Modeling and Design, Fifth Edition: Logical Design (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Data Management Systems)

Database Modeling and Design focuses on techniques for database design in relational database systems. The book discusses the entity-relationship approach and the unified modeling language approach; both are used throughout the book when it refers to logical database design for the specification of data requirements and conceptual modeling.
The book starts with a description of the life cycle of databases, and it goes on to discuss the entity-relationship model and unified modeling languages. It demonstrates how data modeling concepts are used in the process of database design. The book covers database normalization, including information about equivalence on the function of the entity-relationship and unified modeling language conceptual models, and the relational model of the Boyce Codd normal form.
The book explores the difference between object-oriented database systems and relational database systems. It includes a description on handling the impedance mismatch problem by the extensions made to relational systems. Web technologies, including an overview and specific database design issues on XML, are also covered in this book. Lastly, IBMs Rational Data Architect, Computer Associates AllFusion ERwin Data Modeler, and Sysbases PowerDesigner are discussed, and their uses for handling complex data modeling problems are demonstrated.
This book will serve as a guide for both novice and experienced professional database practitioners.

  • In-depth detail and plenty of real-world, practical examples throughout
  • Loaded with design rules and illustrative case studies that are applicable to any SQL, UML, or XML-based system
  • Immediately useful to anyone tasked with the creation of data models for the integration of large-scale enterprise data.

Book Description Morgan Kaufmann, 2011. Book Condition: New. Brand New, Unread Copy in Perfect Condition. A+ Customer Service! Summary: "The addition of XML design will broaden the appeal to programmers and analysts. This is a topic that nearly every programmer must address, yet there are not very many books that describe XML from a data representation perspective I think this will significantly increase the audience for this book." -- Paul C. Brown, Principal Software Architect, TIBCO Software, Inc, Schenectady, NY "I think it is a good idea adding a new co-author (with no criticism intended of the existing authors) HV Jagadish is well respected and will complement the other authors" -- Michael Blaha, OMT Associates, Inc., Consultant (also author of several best-selling DB books for Pearson/PH) "I don't know of other books directly competing in the design space. Teorey et al. is the book to compete against in this market, it is very well established." -- Robert Muller, Data Analyst, Poesys Associates, San Francisco (with offices in US and Europe) "In the proposal they focus on "Information technology shops in a wide variety of companies" and "Job titles: Progammer, programmer/analyst, data analyst, data architect, database administrator". I would also say that this book would appeal to an entire community of developer of Web-based applications." -- Roberto V. Zicari (Germany), responsible for the ODBMS Industry Watch Blog on Trends and Information on Object Databases, Object Persistence, Innovation. He is also full professor of Database and Information Systems at the Goethe University in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, and he is co-author/co-editor of four books in database management. "Teorey's 4th edition is comprehensive and exceptionally well written. I often recommend it to colleagues, clients, and peers for data modeling and database design reference and guidance. I think that with the suggested additional content and context, it will continue to be a leader and well received by the target audience." -- James Bean, TOGAF 8 Certified; TOGAF 9 Level 2 Certificate; Data Architecture, SOA Architecture and Metadata Specialist (MK author of XML for Data Architects).
