From 1968-1974, Dr. Buja undertook post-graduate training and research in anatomic pathology and cardiovascular pathology at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, and became certified in anatomic pathology by the American Board of Pathology. From 1974 to 1989, Dr. Buja was a faculty member in the Department of Pathology at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. From 1989 to the present, Dr. Buja has been a faculty member in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Medical School of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). At UTHealth he has served as department chair, dean and vice president. In December 2009, he became executive director of The Houston Academy of Medicine - Texas Medical Center Library.

Dr. Buja’s scientific career has focused on the pathobiology of cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Buja is internationally recognized for his expertise in cardiovascular pathology and his published research work on the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. In recognition thereof, in 1997, he was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Throughout his career, Dr. Buja has shown a strong commitment to medical education. At the national level, he has served on the Residency Review Committee (RRC) for Pathology and the board of directors of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). For these contributions, Dr. Buja received the 2014 UTHealth President’s Scholar Award for Excellence in Teaching.
