Not everyone in this business is convinced that metasomatism occurs in the mantle, some would argue that tenuous fluids cannot exist under such conditions and prefer to call upon alteration induced by silicate magmas. In particular, those who restrict their definition of metasomatism to the action of a fluid consisting primarily of H2O or CO2 components can cite abundant experimental evidence that such fluids cannot exist at depths greater than about 75 km or less without dissolving in magma or reacting completely with mantle minerals. Documentation of metasomatism is particularly evident in mantle-derived xenoliths. Seven of the 11 chapters discuss such evidence. Metasomatism emerges from the scrutiny in all of the papers in this book as a viable mechanism involved in the genesis of all types of continental and oceanic, basic magmas.
