Synopsis

In this volume the subject matter is again purposely diverse to encourage the broadest possible appreciation of available techniques and data analysis procedures, rather than put undue emphasis on one particular technique (e.g. ultrasonics) to the exclusion of other possibilities, for those considering how best to solve a particular inspection problem or develop an inspection routine. Subject matter includes computer processing of digitized radiographic or ultrasonic test data; theoretical modeling of eddy current techniques to allow one to optimize the design of the test method and formalize the subsequent data analysis; the design and use of a microproccessor-controlled ultrasonic phased array transducer system especially designed for industrial NDT; the concept of mode-conversion in ultrasonics as a means of obtaining more quantitative information about defects; the potential of acoustic microscopy as a materials diagnostic tool as well as a specialized inspection device; the use of optical fibers to cause modulation between light beams and physical and environmental changes and hence to act as sensitive NDT sensors; and finally the use of lasers both to introduce probing beams of thermal and elastic energy into components remotely and to detect surface perturbations and vibrations.
