The Second Edition of Thermal Characterization of Polymeric Materials, edited by Edith A. Turi, continues the tradition of the widely acclaimed original work, providing a comprehensive and fully current reviewof the literature and techniques of thermal analysis of polymers. The two-volume set provides an in-depth overview of thermal analysis by focusing on instrumentation and a wide array of applications in research, development, production, quality control and technical service. Readers will benefit greatly from the well-coordinated and clearly written chapters, which are replete with practical examples. Chapters are written by world-renowned authors and include important, previously unpublished experimentaldata. Fully revised and updated, this Second Edition has grown from 960 to approximately 2500 pages, reflecting the explosive development of the field during the past fifteen years. This comprehensive two-volume set is an invaluable reference source for chemists, engineers, physicists, and other professionals involved in research, development, production, applications, characterization, and evaluation of polymers.
* Revised and updated throughout
* Includes two important new chapters on the characterization of composites and films
* Highlights the characteristics of commercial instruments and their applicability to particular needs
* Helps readers to eliminate costly trial-and-error experiments by judicious use of the examples described
* Provides extensive references to the primary literature
* Features thermal curves, diagrams, and other illustrations, allowing readers to evaluate their own data

Edith A. Turi is a Research Professor at the Herman Mark Polymer Research Institute, Polytechnic University, Brooklyn, New York. She received her Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the Technical University of Budapest in Hungary. Dr. Turi has dedicated more than 35 years of research to the study of the characterization of materials, including polymers, additives, organics, inorganics and alloys. She has published extensively on novel applications of thermal techniques and holds 15 domestic and many foreign patents.A leader in her field, Dr.Turi has been honored with numerous awards for her distinguished contribution to the field of thermal analysis, including extensive teaching efforts around the world for more than 20 years. Recognition of her work has includedthe Outstanding Service Award from the North American Thermal Analysis Society (1981), the International Mettler Award (1985), the Exceptional Achievement Award of the American Chemical Society, Education Division (1991), and the Special Recognition Awardof Polytechnic University (1996)--where the Professor Edith A. Turi Thermal Analysis Laboratory was established in her honor.Review:
"What this reviewer found most impressive about this text is the smooth flow and coordination from chapter to chapter, no doubt a result of the excellent editing abilities and knowledge of the editor."
--JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY
"[It is] a comprehensive, authoritative treatment of the subject, recommended for academic and industrial libraries as well as for the desk of individuals involved in thermal analysis, or in the research, production and application of polymeric materials.
--JOURNAL OF POLYMER SCIENCE
"A thorough work with substantial references following each chapter, this 2 volume set will provide a state of the art reference book, offering a fundamental theoretical background and practical guidance to those working in the field of thermal analysis."
--RAPRA ABSTRACTS, 1997
"This is a book that should be on the bookshelf, or really in the laboratory, of anyone who does any thermal analysis on polymers...It is highly recommended."
--Charles A. Wilkie, POLYMER NEWS
". . . I have been conviced as to the high quality and importance of this book."
"I strongly recommend this book to all professionals who are working in both industry and academia as their primary reference book and practical guidance in their research and development activities." ". . .this book will significantly enhance our current understanding of theory and applications of thermal analysis."
--Stephen Z. D. Cheng,Maurice Morton Institute and Department of Polymer Science,University of Akron, JOURNAL OF THERMAL ANALYSIS, VOL 50, 1997.
". . . the editors and authors have successfully carried out their colossal undertaking and produced a text that is both comprehensive and tightly written, with thoroughly updated information on theory, applications, and instrumentation. It will no doubt be widely used as a reference in chemistry, chemical engineering and material science."
--Rita B. Blumstein, University of Massachusetts, Lowell, JOURNAL OF AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY, Vol.119, No.40 1997
"I recommend this book to all professionals in industry, government, and academe as a basic reference and practical guide for those involved in polymer related research, development, production and characterization. For those involved in thermal analysis-it will be the "bible" used thankfully every day to solve worldly practical problems"
--Eli Pearce, Polymer Research Institute, Polytechnic University, JOURNAL OF POLYMER SCIENCE: PART A: POLLYMER CHEMISTRY, Vol.35, 1997
"This book (two volumes) is going to serve as a background reference and guide . . ."
--David Dollimore, NATAS NOTES, Vol.29, No.4, Winter 1998
". . .provides an in-depth overview of thermal analysis by focusing on instrumentation and a wide array of applications in research, development, production, quality control and technical services. The chapters are written by world- renowned authors and include previously unpublished experimental data."
--Peter J. Haines, THG NEWS, No. 17, Winter 1996
"This book is a must for everyone working with polymers and thermal analysis."
--Peter J. Haines, ICTAC NEWS, No. 1, June 1997
"This book is so vast in its content that it will be the first stop for literature searches and provide the source of methods for characterisation of all tyes of polymers. Many books are now rapidly produced to provide current material, so it is remarkable to find such a large cohesive, yet current treatise on thermal analysis. All thermal analysts will need to have this book on their shelves for continuak access."
--Robert Shanks, Department of Applied Chemistry, RMIT University, POLYMER DIVISION NEWS, December 1997.
"This book will be essential for thermal analysts, who will benefit from it being the most complete reference available, and to polymer scientists for whom thermal analysis provides invaluable information on the structure and performance of polymers. This book is recommended, indeed essential, for all thermal analysts."
--Robert A. Shanks, RMIT University, CHEMISTRY IN AUSTRALIA, APRIL 1999
