Reviews

Kopp, a psychotherapist and author of several books, including An End to Innocence: Facing Life Without Illusions ( LJ 12/15/78) and Raise Your Right Hand Against Fear, Extend the Other in Compassion ( LJ 3/1/89), continues his tradition of writing about the inner self. Here, he seeks to help readers answer the questions "Who am I?" and "What is life's purpose?" He shows how others have dealt with uncertainty, crises, pain, and loss, while revealing how they did (or did not) come out with a better understanding of themselves. His illustrations are a mixture of personal experience (having personally lived with a brain tumor and heart condition for several years), clinical case studies, and biographical histories. All these examples are used adeptly to encourage the reader to take any necessary risk in order to meet one's true self.
