Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.:

Vistas y voces latinas is an anthology of readings by contemporary Latin American and Latino authors designed for students of Spanish who have completed at least four semesters of college-level Spanish or who have the equivalent background. The goals of this text are to help students develop conversational and reading skills in Spanish, analyze literary selections through discussion and short compositions, write creatively in Spanish and expand their knowledge of Latin American and Latino culture through investigations of the cultural topics of each chapter.

Based on our own experiences using the second edition, Vistas: hoces del mundo hispánico, and readers' comments, we have made several substantive changes in this third edition while retaining those components that were successful in the second edition. The new selections and features include the following:

  • New selections by these well-known contemporary authors: Sandra Cisneros, Gustavo Pérez Firmat, Ángeles Mastretta, Marjorie Agosín and Heberto Padilla. In addition to new chapter readings, each chapter is introduced with a poem.
  • New chapter themes: Unidad I: La desilusión y la esperanza, Unidad II: La soledad y la unión, Unidad III: Los derechos humanos y la justicia social, and Unidad IV: La imaginación y la realidad.
  • New organization of selections and exercises:
(a). Each chapter starts with a Para empezar section in which students discuss and compare the poem and work of art that introduce each chapter's theme.
(b). The reading selections that introduce each unit are preceded and followed by Antes de leer and Después de leer exercises that stimulate conversation, creativity and analysis of each author's works.
(c). The biographical introductions of each author are now in Spanish, reflecting a more advanced-level text.
(d). Vocabulary lists and exercises precede the reading selections-to better prepare students.
(e). Each chapter presents more selections, thus increasing the opportunities for discussion and comparison.
  • New vocabulary section of Otras palabras útiles containing useful expressions and terms in Spanish.
  • New Conexiones section with questions and essay topics that compare and contrast all the selections in a chapter, along with a list of recommended films and research topics.

The third edition retains the following popular features of the previous edition:

  • Readings by these highly regarded Latin American and Latino authors: Francisco Jiménez, Rosario Castellanos, Pablo Neruda, Mario Bencastro, Silvina Ocampo, Gabriel Garcia Márquez, and Rosario Ferré.
  • Autobiographical essays by or interviews with the authors.
  • Vocabulary section of Palabras problemáticas.
  • Numerous oral and written activities that challenge students to work with each other or individually to debate issues, create fiction, write analyses, and investigate related topics.
  • Literary selections by both men and women writers.
