The eighth edition of Organizations: Structure, Processes and Outcomes is coming at the thirtieth anniversary of the first edition. A lot has changed. A lot has also not changed. I went over passages that appeared in that first edition and retained them as they were. Other passages were finally eliminated.

The continuity and change reflect the nature of the study of organizations. We are certainly in a rapidly changing world. At the same time, many things do not change. E-businesses need old-fashioned delivery systems for their products and services. E-businesses also are different from their predecessors. The literature has reflected these changes and I have tried to incorporate these changes in this edition.

Thank you to the anonymous reviewers for your suggestions. Many have been incorporated. Each chapter now begins with a chapter overview. There is an irony here. I ask my own students to begin their papers with an introductory paragraph. It has taken thirty years to do it myself. Another addition is a set of questions at the end of each chapter. I have used these same questions as assignments in my classes and they work.

Again, I give my thanks to Sharon Chambliss of Prentice Hall. Her continuing support and help are really appreciated. Another Sharon—my wife Sherry—gives continuing love and support.
