Exceptionally lively, practical, and reader-friendly, this introduction to early childhood education book is unique because of its focus on the value of play. Strong coverage of child development, as well as thoughtful discussions about guiding young children, working with families, and celebrating diversity will help teachers facilitate all aspects of the 0-to-8-year-old child's physical, social/emotional, and intellectual growth. The book also includes an overview and concise history of the field, information on professional development, and clear explanations of theoretical foundations for early childhood education. Chapters on curriculum in the areas of mathematics, science, social studies, language and literacy, and the creative arts show teachers how to link theory to classroom practice, making this comprehensive and engaging book particularly useful. For early childhood educators.

From the Back Cover:

Now in its second edition, Teaching Young Children: An Introduction provides a sound and accessible introduction to the joys and challenges of working with children ages 0-8. Five foundational themes are woven throughout the text: child development, play, guiding young children, working with families and communities, and diversity.

Special features of the new edition include:

  • Separate chapters devoted to indoor play and outdoor play, and Celebrating Play feature boxes sprinkled throughout the text. No other introductory early childhood textbook has such extensive coverage of this important topic.
  • New Multimedia Explorations and Activities boxes at the end of each chapter. Divided into three sections—research, reflect, and respond—these exercises encourage students to further explore important chapter topics using multimedia resources, such as the Internet and the Companion Video Series.
  • The Companion Video Series includes 9 thought-provoking video segments of varying length, with 5 new segments added for the second edition. These videos arc integrated into the text via selected Multimedia Explorations and Activities boxes featured at the end of each chapter. Look for the ABC video icon.
  • The Companion Website, located at www.prenhall.com/henniger. Substantially upgraded for the second edition of the book, the text-specific website includes reflective and multimedia activities, self-tests, web destinations, and a variety of other exciting online resources for faculty and students. Look for the CW icon in the margins of the textbook.
