The Layman/Hart Approach
The Layman/Hart instructional approach is to provide students with simple step-by-step instructions to quickly master the Microsoft® Word 2002 program. Numerous hands-on activities and easy-to-follow instruction lists within the chapters allow students to learn by doing.
By focusing on the tasks students need to perform, the Layman/Hart Microsoft® Word 2002 Made Easy textbook aids instructors in their efforts to assist students in acquiring the work-ready skills needed to succeed in today's job market.
As students work through the text's activities, they are introduced to the proper format for various business documents (e.g., memorandums, letters, email messages, reports, resumes, and newsletters). All of the text's activities are based on authentic real-world documents.
Language Arts Skills
Students receive training and reinforcement of their basic English and grammar skills with the assistance of the Enriching Language Arts Skills section provided at the end of each chapter. One end-of-chapter activity even includes spelling and grammatical errors that can be corrected by the student. The Gregg Reference Manual, authored by William A. Sabin, is used as a guide to create the grammar and punctuation rules.
An Internet term along with its definition is included in the Language Arts section of each chapter. In addition, every chapter contains an Internet activity.
Authentic Skills Assessment
The Next Step and Checking Your Step activities reinforce students' reading, writing, thinking, and decision-making skills and are designed to meet the skills requirements identified by Tech Prep and the Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS), U.S. Department of Labor. (See the Skills Table on page XV.)
Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) Certification Preparation
One of the main goals of this book is to provide thorough coverage of the topics requested for the preparation of Word Core and Expert MOUS certification and to provide activities that will supply effective hands-on practice for performing each skill being measured. A Microsoft Office User Specialist certification for Word Core and/or Expert is given to an individual who can demonstrate his/her proficiency with performing many of the Microsoft Word features and functions.
Why have MOUS certification? This certification can assist in setting an individual apart from other job applicants as well as being used as a significant asset in career development. The Microsoft Word Core and Expert MOUS skill sets being measured are listed on pages xviii to xix.

To the Student
Every chapter is divided into several sections with each section explaining a different Word function. An overview of each function is provided, followed by Start-Up Instructions which present information or actions to be taken in order to prepare you for a hands-on practice activity. Perform the Start-Up Instructions before beginning the step-lay-step instructions. The numbered step-by-step instructions guide you through each action necessary to perform the feature being learned.
Step-by-step instructions are identified by an arrow icon. Finish-Up Instructions follow each set of step-by-step instructions and indicate what should be performed in order to complete the practice activity.
The text for many chapter activities is provided on the accompanying CD. When you see the CD icon in the text, it indicates that the text (data) is available on this CD. This saved text is necessary in order to perform the activity identified by the CD icon.
Answer the Self-Check Quiz questions and check your answers with the answer key provided in Appendix D. Study the vocabulary words, punctuation, capitalization, or typing rule provided in the Enriching Language Arts Skills section. Many of these vocabulary words and punctuation rules are used in one of the activities in the Challenge Your Skills section at the end of each chapter and in a Production Skill Builder project provided in each part.
