Beyond Acceptance is a ground-breaking book that provides parents the comfort and knowledge needed to accept their gay children and build stronger relationships. Based on the experiences of other parents, this book lets them know they re not alone and help them through the emotional stages, providing accurate, documented answers to the questions that surface after the initil shock.

Moving from self-centered concern to acceptance to advocacy, this primer for and by parents whose children are gay suffers from a lack of diversity in the parents' voices and a text that reads like a school paper. Sections of interviews are interspersed with solid information marred slightly by the authors' bias towards a biological explanation of homosexuality and simplistically rendered statistics. Libraries will be better served by Betty Fairchild and Nancy Hayward's Now That You Know ( LJ 5/15/79) or Mary Borhek's Coming Out to Parents: a two-way survival guide for lesbians and gay men and their parents ( LJ 8/83).
