Features

Running Case
The Selections, Inc. Department store is an all-new case for SELECT Lab Series: Projects for Microsoft® Word 2000. As a Running Case, Selections, Inc. puts students in an environment they can relate to, both as students and as future professionals. Each project begins with a scenario that puts students in the department store where they perform tasks that relate to a particular area or division of the store. For example, this Advanced Word module has students create product information for Ritchey Bicycles. Using Word 2000 powerful tools the students integrate various graphics into company brochures for printing or publishing on the web.

Students relate what they're doing in Word 2000 to a real-world situation that helps prepare them for what they may encounter in the business world as professionals.

Challenge/Solution/Setup
Once the student is familiar with the Running Case scenario for the project, the Challenge explains what they are actually going to do as they work through the tasks, and the Solution summarizes a plan for achieving that goal. The Setup provides the settings necessary to ensure that the screen the student sees will match what is shown in the book.

Web Tip
This all-new feature provides the student with links to helpful Web sites and tips for locating additional information about specific topics on the World Wide Web. Web Tips often relate to Word 2000, but include tips students can use in their everyday lives. Each project contains at least three Web Tips that encourage students to explore Web sites that relate to the tasks they are performing in the application, highlight professional organizations that enhance the material, or direct them to topics of interest on their own. Because the Web is constantly changing, some links referenced in Web Tips may become inactive during the course.

CheckPoint
Check Points are placed at intervals throughout each project and provide review questions that seek to assess a student's conceptual or procedural understanding of the current task.

Break Point
Each project in SELECT: Advanced Projects for Microsoft® Word 2000 has been designed to take approximately one hour in the lab. Because students learn at different paces or may not have a full hour to complete a project, the Break Point feature appears at about the midpoint in each project and alerts students of a good stopping point if they need a break but want to continue the project later. Break Points take the guess work out of having to decide whether or not it's appropriate to stop and make it easier for students to start working on a project that they may not have time to complete.

Tips and Troubleshooting Boxes
These feature boxes, popular with both instructors and students, appear throughout the text and have been revised and updated for SELECT: Advanced Projects for Microsoft® Word 2000.

Tip boxes include material that may be useful but that is not required in the step-by-step task instructions.

Troubleshooting boxes alert students to problems they may encounter while using the applications and suggest possible causes for the problems along with potential solutions.

Appendix
The SELECT: Advanced Projects for Microsoft® Word 2000 book contains a useful appendix, Working with Word. It covers basic editing, formatting, navigation and getting help tools. The goal is to provide a review of Word for students who need to brush up on their skills.

The Introduction sets the stage for the project and explains its purpose. Clearly defined and measurable Objectives outline the skills covered. The Running Case puts the students in the real-life environment of the Selections, Inc. department store. The Challenge states the reasoning for the project. The Solution describes the plan for completing the project, which consists of tasks leading to the final product. The Setup tells the student exactly which settings should be chosen so their computer screens match the illustrations in the book. Each topic begins with a brief introductory paragraph that explains the concepts and operations students will learn. An illustration shows the typical screen the student will see. Appropriate, full-color illustrations move the emphasis away from text and toward the visual-based application. Tip and Troubleshooting boxes appear at appropriate places throughout each project to highlight important, helpful information pertinent to the topic being discussed. New Break Points show where students can pause within a project. Clearly defined Tasks guide students step-by-step through each process, providing reassurance and increasing confidence for independent or group work. New Check Points reinforce a concept. Web Tip boxes refer students to Internet sites and offer helpful information about using the World Wide Web. Student Supplements

Student Assessment Software: SkillCheck Professional Plus for Microsoft® Office 2000 features fully interactive test items that allow students to answer questions by performing complete tasks in virtually any correct way the software allows. All of the essential software features are fully simulated, so no additional software is required. In addition to independently validated tests that cover beginning, intermediate, and advanced skills, each SkillCheck Professional Plus system includes a database of more than 100 interactive questions for each Office application. The instructor has complete control over every important aspect of testing and reporting, allowing users to customize or create tests with ease and speed.
