This book has been a labor of love. During the three years that I spent writing it, I was determined not to lose sight of my objectives—namely, to help students derive maximum value from their college experience and to provide accessible, easy-to-learn, and easy-to-use methods for attaining academic and career success.
Whereas some students arrive at college prepared to deal with the formidable challenges that are part and parcel of being in school, other potentially capable students show up without the essential tools. Those who are better prepared have figured out how to learn actively, study effectively, write clearly, think critically, and plan astutely. In contrast, those who are less prepared typically find themselves adrift. These students are at risk academically and vocationally, and one doesn't need a crystal ball to predict the probable consequences. Unless they are methodically taught how to succeed in college, they are likely to tread water and underachieve.
I have designed this book to help college students acquire the basic and advanced study and thinking skills that will allow them to develop their full academic and vocational capabilities. The program provides step-by-step procedures for functioning more productively not only in school, but also in life. Students learn how to study efficiently and effectively, and they learn how to handle real-world challenges, deal with setbacks, solve problems, and avoid miscalculations that could be potentially life altering. In effect, they learn to think strategically, act smart, and study wise.
Two fundamental premises underlie this program. The first is that achievement hinges on deliberately and methodically defining goals, planning carefully, mastering essential skills, being motivated, and working diligently. The second is that conscientious students can easily assimilate a virtually fail-safe system for achieving academically and vocationally. Thirty years of experience teaching thousands of students have convinced me that these premises are valid. I trust that Study Wise hits the intended mark. If so, then the students using this book will also hit the mark. A perfect win-win situation!
