Constitutional Values: Governmental Power and Individual Freedoms in American Politics is a single volume that examines both constitutional law and civil liberties using narrative, well-edited cases, and real-world interpretations. It introduces readers to the underlying political structure of the American judiciary, explores the constitutional foundations for governmental authority, and reviews the legal protections for individual rights and liberties in the American political system. Chapter questions are included to provoke readers’ analytical and critical thinking skills, and over 100 cases help readers understand how constitutional doctrines are applied.  Presents a sound discussion of governmental structure and authority in the first part of the book. Follows with a clear presentation of civil liberties and civil rights in the second part of the book. Contains over 100 edited cases which are referenced in Part Two of the book. Includes important U.S. Supreme Court opinions regarding governmental authority and individual freedoms. Covers standard Supreme Court cases and also incorporates contemporary constitutional controversies. Discusses unique local cases which demonstrate the local implications of constitutional politics.  Includes cases from Maryland, New York, Connecticut, California, Ohio, Minnesota, Iowa, Rhode Island, Alabama, Virginia and more!  Provides true insights into the day-to-day realities of constitutional law.  Encourages readers to apply constitutional doctrines to local controversies. From the Back Cover:

Although easy to dismiss as abstract and disconnected from daily life, the Constitution is in reality a vital, living document that has enormous impact on the lives of every individual in the United States.  The legal questions that have resulted from the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and against terrorism are reminders that the important principles of fundamental law that were expressed by the founders over two hundred years ago continue to provide the framework of governmental authority and individual liberties.

This book includes the following features:

Ø      A discussion of both historically significant cases and contemporary problems, such as those arising from the Patriot Act, recent attempts to control child pornography, and the perennial and thorny federal/state and presidential/congressional tug-of-wars

Ø      A writing style that challenges, but does not overwhelm, undergraduate students

Ø      Comprehensive coverage of the two traditional constitutional law subjects, governmental powers and civil liberties, with the option of splitting them without loss of content or pedagogy

Ø      Excerpts of significant cases reinforce the content and to teach critical thinking and analytical skills

Ø      A feature entitled “Your Constitutional Values” that in most instances uses a local case to illustrate that constitutional problems exist in daily lives

Ø      Review questions and critical thinking and applications assignments follow each chapter

Ø      A glossary of legal terms

Ø      Appendices include the Constitution of the United States, selected statutes, selected Federalist Papers, and a description of how to conduct constitutional research
