9780131826229: History of Art: The Western Tradition, Vol. 1

This classic book uses an exceptional art program, featuring impeccable accurate five-color illustrations, to introduce readers to the vast world of painting, sculpture, architecture, photography, and the minor arts in the ancient world through the middle ages. With its effectively written, balanced, and interesting narrative, this book presents art as a succession of styles—from Prehistory through the middle ages—and enlarges the readers' capacity to appreciate works of art individually. Written more than 40 years ago, this text has been constantly reworked to respond to the needs of this ever-changing field. A reference work suitable for those employed in all art media, including painters, sculptors, photographers, and architects.

About the Author:

H. W. JANSON is a legendary name in the field of art history. For more than twenty-five years professor of fine arts at New York University, he produced an impressive list of publications. Among them are many books that remain standard references, including The Story of Painting for Young People (with Dora Jane Janson, his wife), The Sculpture of Donatello, 19th Century Art (with Robert Rosenblum), and 19th-Century Sculpture. His world-famous History of Art has been translated into more than a dozen languages. Twice a Guggenheim Fellow, Professor Janson was for three years editor-in-chief of the scholarly journal Art Bulletin. ANTHONY F. JANSON, professor of art history at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, has forged a distinguished career as a teacher, writer, and museum professional. Besides authoring books, catalogs, and articles on Western art from the Renaissance to 1900, he has held curatorial posts at the Indianapolis Museum of Art; the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida; and the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh. After his father's death in 1982, Dr. Janson took over authorship of History of Art and History of Art for Young People, on which he had earlier collaborated.
