Written in an easy, conversational style, this is one of the first references to address concepts, architecture, and design of networked multimedia systems--giving equal treatment to both multimedia and networking. Using an abundance of examples and illustrations to explain concepts, it gives balanced treatment to all topics in designing systems.

S.V. RAGHAVAN is Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. His current projects include development of a system dealing with issues on mobile computing, high-speed networks, and operating systems and protocol support for handling multimedia information. He has represented India in IFIP Technical Committee 6 on Data Communications since 1991. He is a Fellow of IETE, a Governor of ICCC, and has served on several editorial boards.
SATISH K. TRIPATHI is the Dean of Engineering and Johnson Professor of Engineering at the University of California at Riverside. His current projects are on mobile computing, ATM networks, and operating systems support for multimedia information. He serves on the editorial boards of Theoretical Computer Science, ACM/Springer Multimedia Systems, IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, International Journal of High Speed Networking, and IEEE Transactions on Computers. He is a member of ACM and IFIP Working Groups 6.3 and 7.3, and is a Fellow of IEEE.
This is the first book to address the concepts, architecture, and design of networked multimedia systems. The authors carefully integrate multimedia and networking concepts to teach the key technologies in designing multimedia systems. Students learn how to simultaneously access and display audio, video, and graphics information in centralized and distributed environments.
The authors systematize the multimedia design process, introduce various subfields that are essential to understanding problems, and give detailed state-of-the-art treatment of each topic. This text is directed to senior and graduate level students since knowledge of basic concepts of computer systems and networking is assumed. Professionals designing multimedia systems will find this book an important reference source.
* Derives requirements for various issues including creation, maintenance, and retrieval of different types of data.
* Considers the impact each medium has on the volume of data and its time characteristics.
* Addresses the issue of compact representation of multimedia information such as images and video for storage, transmission, and processing.
* Focuses on how to handle high volume and time-constrained I/O data using specific storage devices such as CD-ROMs.
* Presents a unique reference model that ties technology and mechanisms together to provide a hierarchical view of networked multimedia design.
* Provides a state-of-the-art literature review on designing modern multimedia systems including traffic prediction, buffer design, traffic shaping, scheduling, and congestion control.
* Examples, figures, and drawings are used to focus on a system design perspective.
