The authors accomplished this by focusing their revision on three key areas of physical examination: Health History, Social and Ethnocultural Considerations, and Health Promotion.

Creina Twomey, RN, MN, PhD(c)
Creina Twomey is a 1988 graduate of the General Hospital School of Nursing in St. John's, Newfoundland. She then attended Memorial University, where she completed a Bachelor of Nursing degree in 1993, and a Master of Nursing degree in 1996. Creina is currently enrolled in a PhD program in Clinical Epidemiology. She has been employed by Memorial University for the past fifteen years and teaches Health Assessment in the BN and Post RN BN programs. In 2002 Creina developed the first online distance education health assessment course offered by Memorial's School of Nursing for Post RN BNs. Her main areas of teaching are Health Assessment, Medicine/Surgery Clinical Practice, Complex Care and Nursing Research.
Creina’s research topics include Psychosocial Adaptation to Chronic Illness, Quality of Life, Psychometrics, Men in Nursing, Clinical Epidemiology, and Community Health Assessment. Her PhD dissertation focus is twofold; first she is assessing adaptation to life on Hemodialysis, and secondly she is developing and refining an instrument that measures adjustment to chronic kidney disease and its treatment. She has also developed a questionnaire that assesses men's reason for choosing nursing, the barriers they experience in practice and their level of job satisfaction. She has been co-lead investigator on three funded research projects and published her findings on men nurses in Canadian Nurse and the Canadian Journal of Career Development. Her research in the area of Community Assessment has resulted in five research grants, five unpublished research reports and one publication in Canadian Nurse. In 2008, the research team Creina works with was awarded "Primary Care Researcher of the Year" by the Scientific Assembly of the Newfoundland Chapter of the College of Family Physicians of Canada. This award was for the team's twelve years of work in assessing the community health needs of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Nicole Harder, RN, MPA, PhD (c)
Nicole has been with the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Nursing for the past eleven years, and was the Coordinator of the Learning Laboratories for eight years before becoming the Coordinator of the Simulation Learning Centre in 2010. Nicole has taught health assessment in the undergraduate nursing program and graduate nurse practitioner program, and continues to look for new ways to help students understand and apply the concepts being taught. In addition to teaching health assessment, Nicole has taught medical/surgical nursing courses, as well as courses related to providing care in diverse societies. She is currently a committee member involved with curriculum development at the undergraduate nursing level at the University of Manitoba. Nicole has written and published articles in the Journal of Nursing Education and Clinical Simulation in Nursing related to high-fidelity simulation in nursing education, and has co-authored articles based on teaching excellence in the Journal of Professional Nursing. Her current research areas include teaching and learning with technology, and factors that affect student learning in high-fidelity simulation.
Nicole is a doctoral candidate in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta. Her research interest is in the area of simulations, with her thesis titled ‘Perceptions and Experiences of Nursing Students’ Learning in High-Fidelity Simulation.’ She has also created a DVD titled “How to Facilitate a Successful Simulation” and this was released in the fall of 2008. Nicole was recently elected as Vice-President for Membership for the International Nursing Association Clinical Simulation and Learning.
Donita D’Amico, MEd, RN
Donita D’Amico, a diploma nursing school graduate, earned her baccalaureate degree in nursing from William Paterson College. She earned a master’s degree in Nursing Education at Teacher’s College, Columbia University, with a specialization in Adult Health. Ms. D’Amico has been a faculty member at William Paterson University for more than 25 years. Her teaching responsibilities include physical assessment, medical-surgical nursing, nursing theory, and fundamentals in the classroom, skills laboratory, and clinical settings.
Donita coauthored several textbooks, including Health Assessment in Nursing and its companion clinical handbook by Sims, D’Amico, Stiesmeyer and Webster; as well as Comprehensive Health Assessment: A Student Workbook and Modules for Medication Administration with Dr. Colleen Barbarito.Donita is active in the community. Within the university, she is a charter member of the Iota Alpha Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International. She continues to serve at the chapter and state levels. She also serves as a consultant and contributor to local organizations.
Colleen Barbarito, EdD, RN
Colleen Barbarito received a nursing diploma from Orange Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, graduated with a baccalaureate degree from William Paterson College, and earned a master’s degree from Seton Hall University, all in New Jersey. She received her Doctor of Education from Teacher’s College, Columbia University. Prior to a position in education, Dr. Barbarito’s clinical experiences included medical-surgical, critical care, and emergency nursing. Dr. Barbarito has been a faculty member at William Paterson University since 1984, where she has taught physical assessment and a variety of clinical laboratory courses for undergraduate nursing students and curriculum development at the graduate level.
Colleen coauthored two books with Donita D’Amico–Modules for Medication Administration and Comprehensive Health Assessment: A Student Workbook. She published articles on anaphylaxis in American Journal of Nursing and Coping with Allergies and Asthma. Her research includes physical assessment and collaboration on revising a physical assessment project with results published as a brief in Nurse Educator. As a faculty member, Dr. Barbarito participated in committees to explore curricular change and to develop multimedia learning modules for critical thinking. Colleen is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. She was an officer and serves as Faculty Advisor for the Iota Alpha Chapter at William Paterson University.
