Two well-written, reasonable books analyzing the future of the economy are presented by well-known economic consultants who have considerable experience in problem-solving and forecasting. Both authors attempt to support a prediction for the future as well as dispense advice for coping with it. Dent demonstrates through S-curve analysis how we can predict economies and downturns. He explains how the Dow may plummet more than 1000 points through the current recession, which may end in late 1994. A 15- to 20-year-long upturn will follow because of the peaking spending power of the baby boomers and their urge to consume new products. He explains influences of the global economy and offers appropriate investment strategies. Minkin, on the other hand, concentrates on the current economy, which he also predicts will worsen. Tough times will prevail; he offers tips on survival and how to prosper with regard to career and investments. He urges the reader to consult an investment advisor regarding specific choices. Both books, timely, thought-provoking material for the general reader, will be in demand for the foreseeable future.
