George Morrison’s goal in creating the Thirteenth Edition of Early Childhood Education Today was to collect the most current, researched-based information available on providing the high-quality early education all children need to be successful in school and in life.

The new edition integrates thirteen critical themes that are foundational to the field today: the importance of children’s literacy development, teaching in increasingly diverse classrooms, applying developmentally appropriate practice, closing the achievement gaps between children in poverty and those that are more economically advantaged, integrating special education and early childhood education, teaching in an inclusive classroom, closing school readiness gaps, meeting the challenges of teacher accountability, integrating STEM subjects into the curriculum, providing for children’s mental health, using technology to support learners, developing as a professional, and guiding children’s behavior to promote personal responsibility.

The new edition retains the engaging style that has made the book so popular and provides practical examples of authentic teaching practices used by master teachers around the country. Its strong coverage of development in the age-specific chapters and its emphasis on diversity make it the leading book in the field. The Enhanced Pearson eText features embedded video, video analysis exercises, and assessments.

This access code card provides access to the new Enhanced Pearson eText,a rich, interactive learning environment designed to improve student mastery of content with the following multimedia features:

  • Embedded videos. In each chapter at least one video is included that illustrates text concepts and provides a window into the real world of teaching young children. (See pages 45, 137, and 322 for examples.)
  • Check Your Understanding of chapter content. Exercises matched to chapter learning outcomes help readers apply the concepts and ensure that they master the learning outcomes. Exercises and suggested feedback are provided in the Pearson eText. (See pages 16, 50, and 391 for examples.)
  • Reflect and Apply exercises. These eText exercises present challenging situations and ask readers to apply text content to propose a solution. Feedback is provided so that readers can compare responses with that of an experienced teacher. (See pages 22, 50, and 361 for examples.)
  • Observe and Analyze exercises. These video-based eText exercises present readers with a video illustrating child growth and development, teaching and/or learning in action. An open-ended question asks readers to examine the video critically and respond using evidence from the video and understanding of chapter concepts. Feedback is provided for support. (See pages 18, 306, and 520 for examples.)
  • Correlation to NAEYC Standards for Professional Preparation Programs. In the eText, new chapter-opening links correlate the chapter to the specific National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) standards covered, helping students become familiar with these important standards for knowledge and practice. (See pages 3, 37, and 157 for examples.)
