About the Author:

IRENE FRANCK and DAVID BROWNSTONE have written more than sixty reference books, including Prentice Hall Reference's Dictionary of 20th Century History, 20th Century Culture, and The Parent's Desk Reference.

From Library Journal:

Prolific writers of reference works ( Dictionary of 20th Century History , LJ 8/90), Franck and Brownstone aim to provide a source of environmental information useful to all levels of interested readers, but they miss the mark. The main focus is a dictionary listing of environmental topics and agencies. However, under some of these listings are other headings that make the original alphabetical arrangement confusing. About one third of the book consists of a "Special Information Section," which lists endangered plants and animals, toxic chemicals, Superfund sites, and so forth. The book displays many inconsistencies, including Chemical Abstract Services (CAS) numbers as a string of digits in one table while in their usual configuration in another and tables with no headings to indicate their purpose. As a consequence, it is recommended only for large environmental collections. A better choice would be the Gale Environmental Sourcebook ( LJ 6/1/92).
