Educational psychology continues to rapidly change and evolve, and we have written the fifth edition to reflect this progress. At the same time, however, we remain true to our original goals in writing this book: to provide you, our readers, with a text that effectively applies educational psychology to the real world. The implications of educational psychology has learning and teaching remain the core of our text. The subtitle "Windows on Classrooms" refers to our active portrayal of true classroom scenarios, which continue to be essential. We liberally use case studies and vignettes taken from actual classrooms to make the content of the text concrete and understandable. This practice is grounded in learning theory and is consistent with the latest learning and motivation research.
We introduce each chapter with a detailed classroom case to provide an applied framework for the chapter content. Frequent references to the case, including specific portions of dialogue, illustrate chapter topics and emphasize application in classroom settings. In this way, our case studies—both written and video—are integrated with each topic presented.
Application alone isn't sufficient, of course. Theory and research are at the heart of educational psychology. In preparing this edition we continually looked to research to inform our writing, and added many new topics, including a close, applied look at technology in education, to focus the book on the cutting edge of theory and research. Integrated Video Case Studies
To truly integrate topics presented in the text with real-world applications, seven classroom video case studies are used—including the three Insights-into-Learning cases that introduce topics in Chapters 7, 8, and 13. By examining learners' thinking in both classroom learning activities and follow-up interviews, these videos provide insights into learning by illustrating learners' thinking and demonstrating the complexities of learning and the sophistication of teaching required to promote that learning. The three, hour-long videos include the actual lesson, an interview with four students, and an interview with the teacher. The focus in each case is on learning and learners' thinking. These three Insights into-Learning videos, plus the end-of-chapter video cases in Chapters 2, 7, 8, and 13, exist in both written and video formats. These cases illustrate actual classroom life—real learners and real teachers involved in learning and teaching in authentic classroom contexts.
Additional Case Studies
In addition to these integrated video case studies, the text includes more than 50 additional written cases—all taken from actual classroom experiences—that illustrate the content of the chapters. Each chapter begins with a case study that provides an anchor for the chapter. The case study is then woven into the chapter to illustrate the topics being discussed.
Windows on Classrooms
Each chapter also ends with a case. This feature, called Windows on Classrooms, illustrates applications of the chapter content. Each "Windows on Classrooms" case is followed by a series of "Questions for Discussion and Analysis" that encourage you to assess the learning and teaching in the case and to reflect on your own knowledge and beliefs as your understanding of learning and teaching develops.
Theory into Perspective
Teachers are faced with a number of alternate theories that attempt to describe and explain learning. Assessing the appropriateness of these theories for specific learning situations can be a daunting task. Theory into Perspective sections at the end of each major learning theory analyze the strengths and weaknesses of these theories and their value in different learning contexts.
As in earlier editions, we have included sections throughout each chapter that offer suggestions for applying the content to specific learning and teaching situations. Classroom Connections describe successful teaching practices in classrooms, from all grade levels and content areas, to illustrate a variety of effective applications.
To respond to the increasingly diverse student populations that we as teachers will encounter, it is critical that we capitalize on the richness that this diversity can bring to learning and teaching environments. To reflect this emphasis, learner diversity is a theme for this text. Each chapter contains a section on diversity, with its own set of Classroom Connections, and Chapter 4 is devoted to this topic.
Margin Questions Research indicates that learning is enhanced when students are actively involved in the learning process. To place you in an active learning role, we use margin questions that ask you to do one of three things: explain a specific aspect of the content on the basis of theory and/or research, relate the immediate topic to one you've studied in an earlier chapter, or relate a topic to a real-life experience. In this regard, the margin questions are intended to help you reflect on the content, further apply your understanding of educational psychology to classrooms, integrate topics, and make the content more personal by applying it to your everyday experiences.
Technology and its implications for student learning are explored and utilized, first in a regular chapter feature that looks closely at the way technology can be and is used in K-12 classrooms, and again in chapters 2, 3, 7, and 9 as we ask you to utilize the information on the accompanying CD-ROM to better ground your own understanding of educational psychology concepts.

Some episodes represent "slices of classroom life" that can serve as focal points for analysis and discussion. Research consistently indicates that learning is enhanced when teachers have high expectations for their students and when they ask them to think critically and analytically about the content they are learning.
