Ward achieved prominence in the business world through owning, in whole or in part, nine successful companies. To transfer lessons he learned to future generations, including his own children, he has written a book of practical advice. In a series of letters directed to the author's son, guidelines are presented informally on such topics as embarking on a career, hiring and firing employees, delegating tasks, expanding a business, and becoming a company chairman. According to Ward, the basic ingredients of success in business are common sense and responsibility. He also includes advice on maintaining good health, dressing well, maintaining friendships, and achieving a happy marriage.
