Legislation requires that newly developed chemicals be registered, using systematic naming, obliging companies to study the Chemical Abstracts Index Guide of the IUPAC Organic Rule Book and endeavouring to apply their rules. This new stand alone book requires no background study and no such interpretations, the user being able to address his new chemical structure to a dichotomous chart and follow through a series of yes and no answers to be directed to the appropriate page, where more precise directions are given as to choice of name-elements, numbering, grammar, spelling and syntax. The book takes the form of chapters neatly divided into sub- headings, which are appropriated according to structural class, eg vari-functional acylics, cyclic systems with more than one principal functional group, to which the chart directs users according to their answers. Obedience to the book's instructions leads to the generation of a number which is constructed according to the IUPAC rules and the preferred IUPAC name consistent with practices already followed in the trade-chemicals list of the EEC.
In other words, choices under the IUPAC rules are made and built into the book's schema; no judgement is called for on the part of the user. Work is currently underway for production of attendant software."synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.
