From Library Journal:
The Children's Television Workshop here offers two new parenting books in its Family Living series (the previous three were Parents' Guide to Raising Kids Who Love To Learn and Parents' Guide to Feeding Your Kids Right , both LJ 6/1/89; and Parents' Guide to Disci plining Your Child , Prentice Hall Pr., 1991). The main goal of Parents' Guide to Raising Responsible Kids is "to help parents instill in their child a set of values that will endure beyond parental influence." An opening chapter outlines the characteristics of a responsible child and shows how these qualities are learned during a child's development. This is followed by a discussion of parents' vital role in guiding and teaching, with an emphasis on the importance of parents providing good models for responsible behavior. Concrete examples are given to illustrate how skills can be learned and applied through daily interactions within the family, with friends, and in school. This well-written and upbeat guide is a useful addition for public libraries. The focus of Parents' Guide to Raising Kids in a Changing World is the child-rearing issues faced by today's parents. Part 1 compares families of the past and present; Part 2 discusses the increase in divorce, stepfamilies, working mothers, and nonparental child care; and Part 3 examines how parents can help their children cope with crime, television violence, drug abuse, and sexuality. Because the many topics are covered so briefly, the result is rather superficial. Also, an overabundance of quotes, statistics, and phrases like "experts agree," "experts warn," and "experts claim" bog down the text. Libraries will find it more worthwhile to consult the books listed in the annotated bibliography. Parents' Guide to Raising Kids in a Changing World is not a necessary purchase.

From Publishers Weekly:
Part of the Children's Television Workshop Family Living series, this pedestrian volume aims to "open doors for parents who want their children to emerge in this world as good citizens standing on their own two feet," in the words of TV star Cosby. There is plenty of sound advice to be found under such headings as "Building a Child's Self-Esteem" and "Praise and Criticism: The Art of Providing Feedback." The section "Education Begins at Home" points out that parents can do much to prepare children for social responsibilities at school by teaching them to share, to do things on their own and to consider the feelings of others. Unfortunately, however thorough, this work's overly neutral tone and plodding style make it a rather dull read. And in citing so many other references on child-rearing, Feiden ( Hope and Help for the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome ) leaves the impression that she has done little but compile others' ideas on the subject. Readers may well wonder why they should be buying this book when there seem to be so many others covering the same ground.
