About the Author:

LAWRENCE HARTE is the president of APDG, a telecommunications research and book publishing company. Lawrence has experience with early stage high growth companies and large multi-national telecommunications companies. His professional experience includes product management, development, marketing, design, and testing of telecommunications, radar, and microwave systems.Between 1994 and 1995, Lawrence was Vice President of Product Management for ReadyCom where he managed development for cellular voice paging products. From 1992 to 1994, Lawrence was the New Products and Applications Manager for Ericsson General Electric. He created and managed a core team of line organization managers to develop product plans for new products. Between 1989 and 1992, he was a Digital Cellular Development Engineer at Audiovox Corporation. In this position, he was the liaison between Digital Industry Standards Committees, Toshiba's Engineering and Cellular service providers. From 1986 to 1989, Lawrence was an Automatic Test Equipment Engineer for Test System Associates on site at Westinghouse. At the Westinghouse facility, he converted technical performance requirements into electronic interface devices and created software programs for automatic testing. Between 1977 and 1985, Lawrence was an Electronics Technician in the US Navy, which included Calibration Laboratory Supervisor for microwave and RF up to 18 GHz.Lawrence has an Executive MBA from Wake Forest University (1995) and a BSET from the University of the State of New York (1990). Mr. Harte has taught and received certificates from many non-university courses including Dale Carnege, Tom Hopkins and Sandler Sales Institute sales, Microwave Measurement and Calibration, Cryptograph, Radar, and Nuclear Power. Lawrence has authored over 12 books and research reports on telecommunications technology, including The Comprehensive Guide to Wireless Technologies (1998), Cellular and PCS, The Big Picture (1997), Wireless Resale Market Report and Forecast 1997-2002 (1997), Cellular and PCS/PCN Telephones and Systems; An Overview of Technologies, Economics, and Services (1996), Digital Cellular: Economics and Comparative Technologies (1993), and Dual Mode Cellular (1991). Tom Steiner was an expert in land mobile radio communications. He did, however, have the opportunity to add his knowledge to this book for which we will all benefit. The tribute to Tom below only provides a small glimpse of how great a man he was.Paul Thomas "Tom" Steiner was raised in Grapeville, PA along the main line of the Pennsylvania railroad. The son of a glass worker and his wife, Tom developed a love for radio communications at a young age. He built his first HAM radio from a kit and earned his Amateur Radio operator's license from the Federal Communications Commission in 1959 at the age of 14.Steiner graduated from Penn Technical Institute in Pittsburgh, PA, and attended classes at Point Park College and Washington & Jefferson College. He spent his entire adult life working in the Land Mobile Radio (LMR) field.Tom worked briefly for Reliance Electric Corporation before joining the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) in 1967. His assignments included various positions in Technical Support, Engineering, and Project Management during a 17-year career.From 1984 until 1990, he was an independent consultant, working in marketing and technical support for such firms as Cooper Power Systems, ITS Corporation, Audiovox Corporation, and Shintom Co. Ltd. During this period, Steiner was instrumental in many projects that revolutionized the LMR industry, including the vast changes in both cellular and trunking technologies.During 1990, he became the incorporator and served as the Vice President/General Manager of Kyodo West, Inc. In 1995, he founded Professional Technology Systems, Inc. (PT Systems). These businesses marketed and sold LMR products worldwide, including developing markets in Africa and South America.Steiner was a member of the IEEE Communications Society, a Senior Member of the Society for Technical Communications, and held a General Radiotelephone Operator License issued by the FCC in the United States. Foreword

Commercial Trunked Radio is currently in operation in over 61 countries worldwide, and it will continue to grow as more and more countries realize the enormous benefits to their economies.

In some countries, we refer to trunked radio as Specialized Mobile Radio, Enhanced Specialized Mobile Radio, or Public Access Mobile Radio, just to name a few. Recognizing the many different terms for essentially the same basic service, be it analog or digital, IMTA prefers to use the term Commercial Trunked Radio.

What characterizes this type of radio system apart from traditional LMR systems is not so much the technology but the nature of exclusive licenses that allow operators to operate as a carrier. Operators of private internal systems often have little incentives to upgrade equipment, maximize capacity, and develop larger coverage areas. On the contrary, commercial trunked radio operators have economic incentives to operate efficiently, expand coverage areas, and to offer an array of different services (voice & data) and more.

Today there are over 8,000,000 units in service worldwide. We use this particular measure for analysis since a typical customer may order and maintain eight radios on average. The overall growth of "units in service" is expected to increase very dramatically as we see more and more digital systems coming on line.
