Scandal tears loose in a quiet Cape Cod town and soon statutory rape, crooked real estate deals, suicide, and official corruption edge the murder story to the side. Interleaved with the big fix story are sexual interludes of graphic intensity. Higgins is widely enjoyed for his command of the crime idiom (e.g., his now-classic Friends of Eddie Coyle ) . Though the dialogue still sizzles and the action is hot, there is enough huffing and puffing to make the reader realize it's the 15th book and a little over ideal weight for the distance.
