A Jean Little Classic

When Lucy's family moves to a new town just before school begins, Lucy is lonely and worried about whether she'll make new friends. Then she meets a little dog that is friendly and may—or may not—be a stray. Her parents let her keep him until they find the owner, but Lucy, who calls him Trouble, begins to hope the owner is never found.

About the Author:

Beloved and award-winning author Jean Little has garnered numerous accolades for her work. Born in Taiwan to Canadian doctors who were serving as missionaries, she was legally blind from birth. Little obtained a B.A. in English Language & Literature from the University of Toronto. She went on to write 44 more works, including novels, picture books, poetry, short stories, and two autobiographical books. She has six honorary degrees and is a Member of the Order of Canada. Little lives in Guelph, Ontario, with her family.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 2-4 An excellent chapter book for children ready to go beyond beginning readers. The few black-and-white line drawings are mediocre but do quietly complement the text. Lucy, new in town, is lonely until she meets a small lost dog. She takes him home, and, of course, wants to keep him. But Trouble obviously belongs to someone, and her parents feel that they must try to find the rightful owners. When Trouble's owner does show up, Lucy is crushed. However, time; the prospect of new friends, including Nan, the girl next door; and a new puppy soothe her distress. Little has created a cast of believable characters, from a transplanted Lucy, to her firm but compassionate parents, to the enthusiastic Nan. Lost and Found is written for a younger audience than Little's previous books, but she maintains her quality of style and composition. Her attention to small details and descriptions, such as Lucy trying out a tire swing in a front yard to see if the child who lived there might be her age, add warmth to the story. The text is simple and uncluttered. The trials of making new friends, the awkwardness of new situations, and the wrenching love for a lost dog are portrayed in a realistic and enjoyable manner.
