Nick has to learn to control his antics on the basketball court if the Alden Panthers are going to win the championship.

Grade 4-8-- Nick spends most of his basketball practices, and even some games, trying to make his teammates laugh by pulling silly stunts. He is a talented player, however, and he eventually develops a more serious attitude toward the game. This newfound intensity doesn't seem to help the boys play any better, however, and the coach encourages Nick to pull a few of his stunts, just to keep things loose. By the novel's end, he has learned to balance fun with the desire to win. The book is full of fast-paced accounts of the action. The descriptions are accurate, and the players don't perform at a level higher than junior-high students could manage--there are no college level feats such as stuffing basketballs. Sports-fiction fans will also appreciate the fact that the plot doesn't get sidetracked; the game doesn't serve as a backdrop for any other concerns. --Todd Morning, Schaumburg Township Public Library, IL
