Grade 3-6-- Nora Jean Sampson's 38 weeks comprising her fourth-grade school year are filled with interesting experiences. Mrs. Carter, her teacher, has a special way of relating to the students and a talent for turning school work into fun. The appearance of a snake in the girls' bathroom leads to an in-depth study of all aspects of snakes. A reading program culminates in a pizza party, and a visit by an author helps the students discover the fascinating ways of cockroaches. Along the way, Nora Jean discovers that relationships with friends and enemies can change with time and maturity. This story is entertaining, but is a bit simplistic and sweet. All of the adults are wonderfully understanding people. None of the children have problems of any significance. Nora Jean is clever and witty, and can come up with catchy ditties to alleviate the little irritations of life. All of the minor troubles are resolved before the end of school so that the summer can start out clean and untroubled. The style of writing suffers from lack of variation. The sentences are all short and simple. While this may make the book attractive to poor readers, others may find it dull and unchallenging. --Carrol McCarthy, Tower Hill School, Wilmington, DE
