Soon after his best friend and neighbor moves to California, two events happen that shape Grady's summer: he plots to take a bus to California and a new family moves in next door, including a boy who is near Grady's age. Unfortunately, Burgess is a skinny, motor-mouthed, grade-A pest, and Grady spends his spare time trying to avoid him, with little success. Eventually, Burgess reveals himself to be a real friend. Grady makes it as far as the bus station before a combination of homesickness and guilt convinces him that his scheme won't work. He returns home, dreading to meet Burgess because of the thousands of questions he is sure Burgess will ask, but again Burgess surprises him. The story is a bit heavy-handed in its message about accepting change, making new friends, and giving people a chance. Also, it is predictable from the beginning, and the ending is too pat. Burgess suddenly turns from a talkative nuisance into a quiet, understanding friend and from a bumbling kid who never says the right thing into a wisecracking boy who can instantly invent wild practical jokes. In the book's favor, it is funny, light, and entertaining. --Nancy P. Reeder, Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, Columbia, SC
