Major monuments and accessible sites which are off the beaten track receive detailed surveys, written to give readers an insight into the purposes these monuments served along with basic descriptions of what remains to be seen today. Over 200 area maps, site plans and photographs are supplied for readers' orientation and to highlight the most important features of the monuments. There is also practical advice for visitors on transportation, food, lodging and local custom.
