Wilberforce, a rambunctious young bear, goes to his first party where he makes plenty of mischief and has a good time.

Kindergarten-Grade 2 Gordon uses the technique of pairing bland, spare text with active, humorous illustrations. The effect is funny because the pictures deliver a message opposite from that of the text: "Everyone remembered their best table manners" is illustrated by a double spread of 15 young bears throwing food, spilling juice, overloading their plates, pea-shooting and generally acting like a group of over-excited children at a party. Wilberforce is the chief instigator of the mischief. The brightly framed line-and-watercolor illustrations are crowded with dark- and light-color bear children. The opening text ("One afternoon Wilberforce went to a party with his brother and sister.") may be confusing as the illustrations show four children playing and a mother bear ironing. On subsequent pages they will realize that Wilberforce is still at home and is about to go a party. Also, Wilberforce's sister is shown in the opening pages wearing a pink dress and hair ribbon; she later dons a green dress. But the birthday girl is then shown wearing an almost identical pink dress; some children may have trouble sorting out the two girls. These elements aside, the story frolics along, and Wilberforce's antics ring true. Although he behaves like a preschooler, Wilberforce will be appreciated by slightly older children who have enough book experience to study the details in the illustrations. Susan H.
