Philippe Dupasquier was born in Switzerland and studied art in France. His French background and training have influenced his own art form, the high quality comic strip, which is very popular on the Continent and formed the bulk of his reading as a child.
Kindergarten-Grade 3 Daddy is a sailor on a year-long voyage. Little Sophie's letters reassure him that he is loved and missed, while describing for him the small events that make up a child's busy year: the birthday party; new red boots; baby brother's new tooth. Two concurrent picture stories describe two very different lives. A narrow upper panel provides "snapshots" of Daddy's voyage to the Orient and his shipboard activities; the larger double-page panel below illustrates Sophie's life with Mummy and baby Timmy. At the voyage's end, Daddy returns to his loving little girl, and both upper and lower panels capture their joy. This warm and reassuring story emphasizes the ties of affection that bind a family together even when circumstances cause separation. Joan McGrath, Toronto Board of Education Library, Ontario, Canada
