Buttercup and baby sister, Daisy, deliver invitations; the family shops for gifts. Birthday morning begins with father and mother making blueberry pancakes and the family decorating the house with balloons and streamers. Grandparents arrive with rabbit-shaped balloons. The guests arrive and join in a treasure hunt, blind bunny's bluff and making funny party hats. Buttercup makes her wish and blows out candles as "Happy Birthday" is sung. Presents are opened and Buttercup receives the skates which she wanted most of all. The minimal text, all conversation, appears in dialogue balloons. Soft glowing pastel watercolors outlined in ink successfully convey the festive mood of this warm whimsical family and capture the frenzied excitement of the day. Schweninger excels at details: little girls in frilly dresses, mother taking snapshots, the mess on the table after the cake has been eaten. On each page several illustrations are set on white background except for two double-page spreads: the toy store and everyone gathered at the birthday table.
